This website presents information on the distinctive characteristics of the Short Line railroad industry, recognizing the intrinsic role Short Line railroads play in maintaining an effective and efficient national transportation system.
The American Short Line & Regional Railroad Database provides information on the Short Line railroad industry derived from an annual survey conducted by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA), the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI), and supported by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The database has also been supported by the Mountain-Plains Consortium (MPC).
Table 5 of the 1999 Annual Data Profile utilizes data reported in the ASLRRA survey and the Association of American Railroad's (AAR) Profiles Program, to provide estimates for Short Line industry carloads, employees, and miles of road.
